This is simply put, a person that is drinking and operating a vehicle at the same time. Alcohol is usually the substance but it can be various other ones.
Regardless of whether you have consumed alcohol, prescription drugs or illegal drugs, you are considered to be under the influence as long as your physical or mental abilities are impaired. Many mistakenly think that they can consume these substances ad yet remain in control of themselves. The fact that the ability to drive a vehicle is affected is ignored by many.
Operating under the influence also means attempting or operating a motor vehicle with a blood content level of .08 percent or more. Authorities do not check and test whether this level actually impairs or affects you. As long as the device reads a content level higher than allowed, you will be convicted.
Sadly, these types of accidents are responsible 25,000 deaths a year. This breaks down to 500 per week, 70 daily and one every 20 minutes. This is way too many lives lost such a senseless way. Fortunately, the convictions for DUI offenses are increasing.
Every time a person sets out in the car they need to keep alert for cars that seem to be moving questionably. The possibility is always present that it could be someone driving under the influence and being aware could save your life.
For your and others in your car always wear your seat belt and be sure young children are in safety seats in the back. You can’t be too cautious when driving since you have to be aware around you watching out for the other drivers, since the reckless ones are on the road, also.
Nobody should ever risk driving while intoxicated. This can not be emphasized enough. Just one time and one wrong move and you run the risk of ruining your life and that of many others.
They say life is too precious to be wasted but that is exactly what happens when someone is selfish enough to drive a car while intoxicated or under the influence of another substance. Innocent people, including children die or have lost loved ones because of this senseless act.
Don’t listen to what others say, but instead make your own decision not to get behind the wheel if you are under the influence of some substance. You owe it to yourself and others.
