Although, at times, it is cheaper for the travelers, there are also many situations where this could cost them more or worse yet they may have to wait a few days into the vacation before a rental is available.
Waiting until you arrive, to rent your car, with hopes of saving a few dollars, is fine. But it would be wise to have a back up plan just in case. Rental companies will do anything to rent out whatever vehicles are still in their lots, therefore a better way to getting a cheaper rental is to research the company and find out what there policy on cancellations are. Then as long as you leave yourself enough time to shop around at local rental companies, once you arrive, and still have the ability to cancel your reservation without penalty you will be fine.
Buy utilize this method you are giving yourself a sense of security, by knowing that no matter what happens on your search for a cheaper rental, you will have a vehicle. This also gives you a piece of mind, that you have gotten the best deal available.
Since many rental companies will ask you for a pick up date and time be sure to leave yourself enough time to cancel, should you find a better rental deal. It is also good to know that many rental companies will have your vehicle ready a few hours prior to your pick up time, so always over estimate as your vehicle will be ready for you either way. If so some chance your vehicle is not ready when you arrive, it is better to have to wait, than have to pay cancellation fees.
Everyone looks to save money, especially when they are going on vacation, but without a vehicle your vacation will be much less than perfect. It is okay to shop around, just make sure that you have a vehicle reserved before you decide to shop around.
